Then it becomes urgent, and the search usually ends the same way: the dealership quotes a new module and a very large bill, and the general repair shop explains that airbags are not something they touch. What airbag repair actually covers
The airbags themselves are only one part of the system. A complete airbag repair can involve the airbag control module, the crash sensors, the clock spring behind the steering wheel, the seat belt pretensioners, the occupant classification sensor in the passenger seat, and the wiring that ties all of it together. Moreover, every one of those parts has to talk to the others correctly before the system will arm itself again.
This is why a warning light that looks identical on two cars can mean two completely different repairs. The magnesium chloride used on Colorado roads through the winter is very effective on ice and very hard on electrical connections. On older vehicles that spend the season climbing and descending treated highways, we find corroded connectors and damaged wiring that set airbag faults years before anything else on the car starts to fail.

Mountain roads mean a great deal of steering, and the clock spring behind the wheel is a wearing part. Foothills vehicles also tend to be kept longer, which means more trucks and SUVs old enough that the original restraint components are simply at the end of their service life. Last but not least, dirt and gravel roads work connectors loose in a way that pavement never does.

After that we explain what we found, what it will take to put right, and what it will cost, before any work starts. The diagnostic itself is free, and if the answer is a loose connector under a seat, we would far rather tell you that than sell you a repair you do not need.
